A weed mat is a UV-stabilized, breathable fabric that blocks sunlight to suppress weeds, while still allowing air, water, and nutrients to reach plant roots.
Yes! Clear weeds, roll out the mat, secure with landscape pins, cut holes for plants, and cover with mulch or gravel for a neat finish.
Absolutely. Use a permeable, eco-friendly weed mat that allows moisture and nutrients through, keeping soil healthy while controlling weeds in veggie patches.
To cut weed mat, we recommend you use heavy duty scissors – this will ensure a smooth straight cut.
It is important to understand that weedmats are designed to suppress weeds, not fully eliminate them. They are designed to reduce sprouting in an area (by blocking essential sunlight though), thus reducing weeds that come through. The garden will still require regular maintenance to pull out the weeds that may have sprouted from time to time. However the overall maintenance will be reduced vs an untreated area.
GSM stands for grams per square meter. This is how fabric is measured and used to determine the density of the material. The higher the GSM, the thicker and denser the mat will be.
Although it would depend on the weed mat used, the general benefits are – it reduces weeds, conserves soil moisture, prevents erosion, and eliminates the need for chemical sprays—perfect for garden beds, paths, and under mulch/stone.
If you were to use a quality weed matting, it will support soil health by allowing water and nutrients to pass through. Although, yes, some weed mats can negatively affect soil health by restricting air and water movement – which can potentially lead to soil compaction and limited air circulation, which are very important for healthy soil.
The longevity of weed matting depends on the material, the thickness and type of weedmat. It is important to note to follow installation instructions to ensure longevity, most plastic weedmat will need to be fully covered with toppings like mulch or pebbles.
For example, a general use weedmat like our Landscapers range will last 5-10 years depending on the environment and installation. Our Eco weedmat made from corn will start to biodegrade in 2-3 years time depending on the environment.
When installing our Platinum weed mat – the “fury” side needs to be facing down, allowing the shiny, plastic side to be exposed. You will then need to ensure you cover the exposed surface with mulch or other desired toppings.
