How to: Prep your garden for winter

The incoming cooler weather means some changes are coming to your garden. Get your garden winter ready with our tips and tricks to ensure your garden is bursting with life and vibrancy next spring.

It's time to prune

To give your plants the best chance at success in the spring, it’s time to begin pruning. First, remove dead leaves or branches from surrounding plants and trees. This will help your plants grow more effectively in spring.

Add a pop of colour

Winter can feel dull and dreary; add a pop of colour to your garden or home with various plants that love the cooler weather. Consider adding violas or pansies to your garden bed. Or add some hanging pots to your space indoors to breathe life back into your home.

Top up mulch

While you may think your garden has gone to sleep in the cooler months, there is so much activity beneath the soil. So it’s time to replenish that mulch to allow growing roots to continue to draw nutrients from the soil. This can also help keep the soil warm, preparing it for springtime planting.

Indoor plants need life too

Ensure your plants are exposed to direct sunlight for at least a few hours daily. This may mean moving your green friends around the home to find the perfect spot. Also, remember that plants are affected by temperature, so ensure they are placed in a spot with consistent temperatures, avoiding harsh heat from heaters and thermal shock from open windows or under-doors drafts.

What to grow in winter

Cold weather doesn’t mean you need to stop attending to your veggie patch. If you’re looking to grow some veggies for those winter soups and dishes, it’s time to consider planting. Some great options are:

  • Broccoli
  • Cauliflower
  • Carrots
  • Garlic
  • Radishes
